COBRE Small Grants Program

The purpose of the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Small Grants Program is to provide support via three funding mechanisms to University of Hawaii (UH) faculty engaged in research in microbiology, immunology, emerging infectious diseases and tropical medicine. However, research projects on HIV/AIDS or on microbial infections and/or diseases in HIV-infected individuals will not be considered. Proposed projects must use one or more of the Center’s cores ( http://pceidr.jabsom.hawaii.edu/index.jsp ).

1. Pilot Projects Program: Provides funding for short-term basic, clinical and translational science projects, as well as community-engaged research, on new, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Inter-institutional collaborations and mentoring between UH faculty and investigators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR programs (http://publications.nigms.nih.gov/Multimedia/Map/COBRE/), or research-intensive institutions, or international field sites, are encouraged but not mandatory. For junior investigator applicants, a Mentoring Plan is required. A timetable for seeking extramural funding is required.

2. Bridging Funds Program: Provides funding to UH faculty, who have scored or unscored, and unfunded or unpaid, R-, U- or K-series NIH grant applications, or equivalent applications to other federal agencies and private foundations, that involve research on new, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Faculty can submit an application for each scored or unscored, and unfunded extramural grant application. A timetable for resubmission of the unfunded application is required.

3. Faculty Exchange Program: Provides funding to UH faculty to meet with prospective mentors or collaborators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR programs, or research-intensive institutions, or international field sites, to design and plan future pilot projects on new, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases for the Small Grants Program or grant applications to NIH or other funding agencies. A timetable for seeking extramural funding is required.
