Screening of Compounds for Anti-malaria Activity

21 September 2012

Sandra Chang, a Professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, has recently received a grant from Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. to evaluate the ability of several Vertex compounds to inhibit the in vitro growth of the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. This sponsored research agreement between the University of Hawaii and Vertex will provide feasibility data for the potential development of one or more of these compounds as anti-malarial drugs. William Gosnell, also of the Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, will be a co-investigator on the study.
