A former COBRE Small Grants Program award recipient, Angel Yanagihara, one of the world’s foremost experts on jellyfish envenomation, is currently serving a six-week assignment as a U.S. Department of State Fulbright Specialist at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. She is working with her host, Nuankanya Sathirapongsasuti, to collect box jellyfish to study their venom and to train public health workers and researchers on how to best treat jellyfish stings.

Yanagihara, an associate research professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and in the Bekesy Laboratory of Neurobiology of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, has developed innovative technologies to treat cubozoan envenomation.
