University of Hawaii (UH) faculty engaged in research in microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases and tropical medicine are invited to submit applications to one or more of the three funding mechanisms available in the COBRE Small Grants Program. HIV/AIDS research projects and applications from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will not be considered. Use of one or more of the Center’s cores is mandatory .

  1. Pilot Projects Program: Provides funding for short-term basic, clinical and translational science projects that involve inter-institutional collaborations and mentoring between UH faculty and investigators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR centers (http://publications.nigms.nih.gov/Multimedia/Map/COBRE/), or research-intensive institutions, or international field sites. For junior investigator applicants, a Mentoring Plan is required. For all applicants, a timetable for seeking extramural funding is required.
  1. Bridging Funds Program: Provides funding to UH faculty, who have scored or unscored, and unfunded or unpaid, R-, U- or K-series NIH grant applications. Faculty can submit an application for each scored or unscored, and unfunded, R-, U- or K-series NIH application. For all applicants, a timetable for the A1 resubmission is required.
  1. Faculty Exchange Program: Provides travel funds to UH faculty to meet with prospective mentors or collaborators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR centers, or research-intensive institutions, or international field sites, to design and plan future pilot projects for the Small Grants Program or grant applications to NIH or other funding agencies. A timetable for seeking extramural funding is required.
