Description: Most serious emerging infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, SARS and pandemic influenza, are zoonotic. None had been predicted before their appearance in the human population. While early warning for emerging infectious diseases remains challenging, our improved understanding of factors driving infectious disease emergence, and new technological capabilities, are beginning to make this problem increasingly feasible to address.
