Dr. Axel T. Lehrer, a former COBRE Small Grants Program awardee, and his research team have successfully developed a recombinant subunit protein-based vaccine for Zika virus. Previously, he demonstrated that this vaccine was effective in protecting mice from Zika virus challenge. These studies have now been extended to show efficacy in non-human primates. This is an important milestone, and offers promise that this vaccine may be effective in protecting humans against Zika virus infection.
