COBRE Small Grants Program 2018-2019

The purpose of the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Small Grants Program is to provide support via three funding mechanisms to University of Hawaii (UH) faculty engaged in research in tropical medicine, medical microbiology, immunology, and non-HIV/AIDS emerging infectious diseases. Budgets for proposed projects must indicate costs for specific services provided by one or more of the Center’s cores (http://pceidr.jabsom.hawaii.edu/index.jsp)

1. Pilot Projects Program: Provides funding for short-term basic biomedical, behavioral, clinical and translational science projects, as well as community-engaged research, in tropical medicine, medical microbiology, immunology and non-HIV/AIDS emerging infectious diseases. Inter-institutional collaborations and mentoring between UH faculty and investigators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR programs (http://publications.nigms.nih.gov/Multimedia/Map/COBRE/), or non-IDeA research-intensive institutions, or international field sites, are encouraged but not mandatory. For new and early-stage investigator applicants, a Mentoring Plan is required. A timetable for seeking extramural funding is also required. UH faculty who were PI of COBRE Phase I or II projects are ineligible.

2. Bridging Funds Program: Provides funding to UH faculty, who have scored or unscored, and unfunded or unpaid, R-, U- or K-series NIH grant applications, or equivalent applications to other federal agencies and private foundations, that involve research in tropical medicine, medical microbiology, immunology and non-HIV/AIDS emerging infectious diseases. Faculty can submit an application for only one scored or unscored, and unfunded extramural grant application. A timetable for the A1 resubmission is required. UH faculty who were PI of COBRE Phase I or II projects are eligible.

3. Faculty Exchange Program: Provides funding to UH faculty to meet with prospective mentors and/or collaborators from other COBRE, INBRE or IDeA-CTR programs, or non-IDeA research-intensive institutions, or international field sites, to design and plan future research in tropical medicine, medical microbiology, immunology and non-HIV/AIDS emerging infectious diseases. A timetable for seeking extramural funding is required. UH faculty who were PI of COBRE Phase I or II projects are eligible.
